May 2018 Update from the Principal

Dear Parents, Students and Community Members,

Hopefully you had a chance to get out and enjoy the tulips and the Tulip Time festivities this year. The weather is finally starting to feel like we are moving toward summer and the spring semester is moving very quickly toward graduation at WOHS.

The Class of 2018 will go down in history as one of the most academically accomplished classes in the history of West Ottawa High School. This class includes 17 Valedictorians (4.0 GPA) and 9 Salutatorians (3.99 GPA).  All 26 Vals and Sals have multiple AP, IB, and Dual Enrollment courses on their transcripts.  This class truly challenged themselves by taking the most rigorous classes offered, and they excelled in the classroom. West Ottawa High School is pleased to recognize the Class of 2018 Top Scholar, valedictorians, and salutatorians at Senior Honors Convocation on May 22.  These students have attained the highest level of academic standing through four years of hard work and dedication to their studies.  West Ottawa teachers, administrators, and support staff congratulate these fine students.

The word “college” is used daily in classrooms throughout West Ottawa High School. From the school-wide College Application Week in the fall to recognizing senior’s college acceptance letters via the PA system each and every week, college is on the mind of WO students. It is a dream pursued and accomplished by an increasing number of WO grads. WOHS staff members stress that college can mean many different things; from Ivy League schools, to four year in-state universities, community colleges, vocational schools, or the military, post-secondary education (college) is stressed as a must for all current and future WO graduates.

On May 1st, WOHS College Advisor Austin Whitted and members of the counseling staff ran our 4th annual College Decision Day celebration. Over 500 seniors entered the main gym, were greeted by staff members and recognized in front of classmates for their post secondary decisions. Many seniors received gear and gifts from their respective colleges and universities. Many local colleges sent representatives to personally celebrate with Seniors.

Seniors from the Class of 2018 have been accepted to over 100 colleges and universities. You can see a list of most colleges acceptances on page 2 of our 2018 West Ottawa High School Profile.

IB AP Week at WOHS

The week of April 30-May 4 was the first annual IB AP Week at WOHS. This week was a celebration of the immense preparation of our over 500 IB and AP students taking IB and AP tests beginning on May 7. This week culminated in a special “Prep Rally” breakfast for all test takers on the morning of May 4. Test takers were treated to a special menu in north cafeteria. The event was limited to only those students taking IB or AP tests. See the Holland Sentinel’s coverage of the week here.
