We are very excited to announce that both the WOHS Chamber Orchestra (directed by Chris Meyer) and and WOHS Symphony Band (directed by Mike Hamann and Jay Gainforth) were selected to perform at the 2018 Michigan Music Conference in Grand Rapids on Friday, January 26, 2018! The Michigan Music Conference is an in-service for all K-12 music educators in Michigan, and is held in DeVos Place, with performances occurring in DeVos Hall. To be selected for this honor, groups must submit a recording, and are chosen during a blind audition process by a panel of music educators. Chamber Orchestra was one of two HS orchestras and Symphony Band was one of four HS bands selected to perform.
This is the second time that both of these groups have been selected to perform at the conference. Chamber Orchestra was last selected to perform in 2014 and Symphony Band last performed in 2012. It is a huge honor to be selected even one time, so for these groups to be selected a second time is an even more outstanding achievement.
We are one of just a few schools in the state that have had both their top band and orchestra selected in the same year, and to have so many performing groups at the conference over the last few years (Symphony Band 2012 & 2018, Chamber Orchestra 2014 & 2018, Jazz I 2014, WOSWE 2011 & 2016). WOHS is in very select company in the state of Michigan in regards to the quality of its music program! Congratulations to all of the students whose hard work is being recognized at the state level!
