Dear Students, Parents, and Community,
Its hard to believe that fall is finally here. Our Student Senate recently organized a successful Homecoming Week 2017 and our student body was highly involved in school spirit and activities . A times it seems like we never skipped a beat between last school year and now. One of the best parts of Homecoming week is the positive impact that collective school spirit can have on freshmen and students new to West Ottawa High School. If you have not been around for a WO Homecoming week before, it is truly something special to be a part of. It is amazing to see how our school spirit continues to grow and how our school culture is positively impacted by those who make events like Homecoming Week happen. This is a perfect example of how positive student and teacher leadership can affect school culture. A special thanks goes out to our entire Student Senate and WOBN for putting so much effort into Homecoming week. COLLEGE APPLICATION WEEK 2017
West Ottawa High School is fortunate to partner with Destination Education and the Michigan College Access Network to provide a full time college adviser on our campus. Mr, Austin Whitted is a recent graduate of Michigan State University and was hired by the high school administration the summer of 2017 to fill this important position. The 2017-18 school year marks Mr. Whitted’s first year at WOHS. The college adviser’s sole responsibility is to assist students in navigating the college-going process. Mr. Whitted will focus mostly on providing first generation students with support in applying to colleges and identifying scholarship opportunities, opening up college access to all students.
WOHS College Application Week (CAW) was held October 23-27. College Application Week 2017 was filled with college themed days, events, and encouragement for Seniors to complete applications. Our goal is for 100% of Seniors to complete at least 1 college application and 75% to complete 3 or more. Mr. Whitted held college application help sessions each day. On Monday, October 23 West Ottawa High School counseling staff teamed up with local college admissions officers from Hope College, Grand Valley, GRCC, and Davenport to offer a Financial Aid and FAFSA help session for seniors and parents.
Mr. Whitted also organizes college visits for WO students throughout the year. Be sure to follow our College Corner on Twitter at @GOWO_College for daily updates and college tips. You and your student can schedule an appointment with our college advisor at any time by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
2016-2017 Scholar athletes
Once again, West Ottawa High School is very proud to inform the community that academics and athletic performance complement each other. Success in the field, on the court, in the pool, and in the classroom are synonymous.
Again, the Athletic Department would like to recognize those athletes who have been able to balance academic achievement with the high demands of participation in athletics during the 2016 – 2017 school year, the Scholar Athlete and also the Multi-Sport Athlete.
This past year, 2016 – 2017, 808 individuals competed in athletics for West Ottawa. During the three seasons of competition, athletic participation was 1,220 (athletic participation includes multi-sport athletes). This is an increase, in both categories, from the previous year.
Multi-Sport Athletes are those competing in more than one sport during the year. Last year West Ottawa had 349 Multi-Sport Athletes. One competed in four sports, 61 competed in three sports and 287 competed in two sports. Seniors accounted for 44 of the athletes and 305 are returning for another year of participation. 213 earned a Varsity Letter in their sport.
Scholar Athletes are those individuals who maintained a grade point average of 3.5 or higher during their season of competition. West Ottawa’s overall athletic-academic GPA for our 808 athletes was: 3.30 (B-).
399 athletes maintained a 3.5 or higher GPA during their season of competition. This is almost 50% of all West Ottawa athletes. Also, 204 maintained a GPA of 4.00 or higher during their season of competition. There were 214 female and 185 male scholar athletes. The Scholar Athlete GPA’s for the three seasons of completion were:
Fall – 4.00; Winter – 3.98; Spring – 3.96 Overall GPA for the year – 3.98 !!!
Congratulations to all of West Ottawa’s Multi-Sport Athletes and Scholar Athletes.
